An original watercolor painting depicting a trial match off Sandy Hook in 1914. The 'Resolute,' designed by Nathanael Greene, and the 'Vanitie,' designed by William Gardner, have just rounded the Ambrose lightship. A steamboat, presumably full of spectators, also rounds the lightship. In 1914, the two yachts competed in trial matches to qualify as a defender in the America's Cup against Sir Thomas Lipton's challenger, 'Shamrock IV.' Out of eight starts against the 'Vanitie,' the 'Resolute' won six races, leading her to be selected by the Cup Defense Committee as the defender.
