Stela Dedicated by Nebnefer to Meretseger

Museo Egizio, Turin

This votive stela was dedicated by a man named Nebnefer to Meretseger, "She Who Loves Silence", the cobra goddess of the peak that towers over the Valley of the Kings. Its decoration is dominated by rows of serpents, the goddess's sacred form.

The workmen of Deir el-Medina set up many small stelae to Meretseger, some of them confessing wrongdoing and thanking the goddess for mercy after an illness they believed she had sent.
