False Door and Offering Table of Princess Wehemnefret

Museo Egizio, Turin

A false door was the focal point of an Old Kingdom tomb chapel: a carved imitation doorway through which the ka, the spirit of the deceased, was believed to pass between the burial chamber and the world of the living to receive offerings. Family members and priests placed food and drink on the offering table in front of it.

This false door and offering table were made for Wehemnefret, a princess, and are inscribed with her name and titles together with the standard offering formula asking for bread, beer, oxen, fowl and linen for her ka.
