This massive rectangular stone sarcophagus bears the name Duaenre, a name held by a 4th Dynasty prince and vizier, a son of King Khafre. Old Kingdom sarcophagi of this plain box form were lowered into burial shafts beneath mastaba tombs in the royal cemeteries around the pyramids.
The weight and simplicity of the stone reflect the Old Kingdom ideal of the tomb as an eternal house, built to last forever.
