This is a copy of the decree (Ahdname) that Mohamed, Prophet of Islam, himself issued in the Hegira year 2 (623) granting the safety of all spiritual and property rights of the monks of Sinai, as well as of Christians “around the world”. This copy was ratified by an Ottoman judge in Cairo in the Hegira year 1192 (1778). The document is written in calligraphic lettering of various types, and the names of the 22 witnesses of the original decree are written in red ink.
