This is a unique work of art with respect to the history of the monastery, signed by painter Peter. The Mother of God holding Christ before her is in the center, under the inscription “The Mother of God, of the Bush”, a wording that appears only in this particular icon. Obviously the wording refers to the Burning Bush that symbolizes the Incarnation. The Virgin is flanked by four saints of Sinai: Georgios the Ismaelite, Neilos, Anastasios, and John of the Ladder. Their postures are almost identical, the bodies almost schematic, their expression austere; nonetheless the individual faces are distinct and bright, exuding a sense of deep spirituality.
