This cross is most probably part of a group of lights from lamps and polycandela, suspended with chains from the ceiling. It was donated by Presbyter Epiphanios in gratitude for the fulfillment of his prayer. This type of inscription is often found in early Christian ecclesiastical works of art; the same is true of the pierced technique often also used to execute decorative motifs and inscriptions in metal.
