Saint Anthony is portrayed facing forward, with his right hand resting on a staff and his left holding an open scroll. His is wearing a monks’ koukouli on his head. He is surrounded by twenty busts of holy figures and saints, the top three forming the Deesis scene. The inclusion of Sainst Catherine, Prophet Moses, and the abbots of the Monastery John of the Ladder and Anastasios, suggests that the icon was intended specifically for Sinai, and was possibly commissioned by a monk of Sinai.
