A photo-processed reproduction of an oil painting by Lieve Verschuier now at the Rijksmuseum (SK-A-448) depicting the arrival of Charles II, King of England, in Rotterdam on May 24, 1660. Charles II entered into Rotterdam harbor escorted by yachts, ships, and boats of all sizes. He was in exile in Holland and called back to England to ascend the throne, making highly celebrated stops at Rotterdam, Delft, and Scheveningen. The king is on board the decorated yacht in the middle foreground.
The collector, Arthur H. Clark, used this print from his collection to illustrate his book 'The History of Yachting, 1600-1815' (New York & London: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1904), 54. He writes: "The yachts stopped for a short time at Rotterdam, and a picture is here given of the fleet, taken from the celebrated painting by Verschuring. No reproduction, however, can convey the beauty of this picture. The yacht that carried King Charles is in the foreground, near the centre of the picture, her stern and quarters superbly ornamented with sculpture, embellished with gold, blue, orange, and red."
