This monochrome engraving represents a three-masted vessel sailing before the wind, with her fore-sail, fore-topsail, main-topsail, and mizen-topsail set; a flag is flying at her bowsprit; some of the crew are on the fore-castle hauling down the foresail. The whale swims on the surface of the sea, heading from left to our right, opens its mouth, and is about to swallow a barrel, which is identified as the Tub in a catalogue entry from the British Museum Library.
