An engraving depicting an event from a series of naval engagements between the Spanish and British that took place during the War of the Austrian Succession from July 25 to October 19, 1747. It started when a group of British ships spotted the Spanish, 70-gun ship of the line, 'Glorioso,' heading towards Cape St. Vincent. The Spanish ship successfully evaded the British and dropped off its cargo. Believing there was still treasure on board, the British frigate, 'King George,' chased the 'Glorioso' and the two exchanged fire in which the British frigate became disabled. 'Glorioso' continued to head south, but was further chased by three British frigates and two ships of the line, 80-gun HMS 'Russell' and 50-gun HMS 'Dartmouth.' The three exchanged fire, and the 'Dartmouth' exploded during the engagement. After action lasting five hours with the 'Russell,' the Spanish ship surrendered.
'King George' is in ship towards the left closest to the foreground. Half of the mizzen mast is destroyed and the rigging is damaged. Behind her are various ships that have identifiable British flags. The 'Glorioso' and the HMS 'Dartmouth' engage in battle and engulfed in smoke in the distance in the right side of the print. The descriptive, English text at the bottom of the margin erroneously indicates the year of the battle as occurring in 1748.
