The scene is crowded with sailing craft and excursion boats. There is a stern view of the yacht 'Fanny' in the left foreground; sailors work to quickly spread her sails. The yacht 'Gracie' is to the right of 'Fanny.' Hidden behind the two racing sloop yachts is a lightship that is being used as a mark for the racecourse. A third yacht, the 'Rover' is in the distance, on the right side of the print, heading bow-first towards 'Fanny' and 'Gracie.' The exact location of the race is unknown, however contemporary races often began in New York Bay, down the Narrows to either Sandy Hook or Scotland lightship, then returned the same way. At the far right dressed with flags is a steamship filled with spectators, and the tug behind it was said to have the race officials on board. This lithograph was made after a painting by Frederic S. Cozzens titled, 'Rounding the Lightship.'
