A brightly hand-colored print (T. II) that is after the painting Allegory of Temperance by Luca Giordano. Giordano made 10 old studies in preparation for his fresco projects at the Palazzo Medici Riccardi in Florence. In the Palazzo, this painting is connected with the ceiling of the Galleria. This print is one of the three companion prints of paintings after Giordano (T. II, III, IV).
Temperance, one of the four Cardinal Virtues, holds a bridle and a clock and stands beside an elephant. Sobriety holds a key and rests her foot on a whale or dolphin. Meekness (?) receives flowers from putti flying above her. The figures at the bottom of the composition represent Sloth, Envy and Hunger. In the sky above are Voluptuousness, Youth and Tranquillity.
