Protective Goddess with Outspread Wings

National Museum of Egyptian Civilization

This figure shows a goddess kneeling with her wings spread wide in a gesture of protection, accompanied by a cobra. Winged goddesses, especially Isis and her sister Nephthys, were shown sheltering the dead with their wings, recalling how Isis revived Osiris by fanning breath into him.

The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Fustat, Cairo, opened in 2021 and traces Egyptian civilization from prehistory to the present; it is also home to the royal mummies moved from the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square.
