Necklace with Pendant

National Museum of Egyptian Civilization

Egyptian jewelry combined beauty with protective power. Necklaces and pectorals were made from gold, faience and semiprecious stones such as carnelian, turquoise and lapis lazuli, each with its own symbolic meaning, and pendants often took the form of amulets or divine symbols.

The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Fustat, Cairo, opened in 2021 and traces Egyptian civilization from prehistory to the present; it is also home to the royal mummies moved from the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square.
