Statue of Amun-Ra from Karnak

National Museum of Egyptian Civilization

Amun, "the Hidden One", rose from a local god of Thebes to become king of the gods in the New Kingdom, merged with the sun god as Amun-Ra. His great temple at Karnak was the largest religious complex in Egypt, enlarged by pharaohs over some two thousand years.

Amun was often represented by the ram, one of his sacred animals, and ram-headed images of the god appear in sculpture and in the avenues of sphinxes at Karnak.

The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Fustat, Cairo, opened in 2021 and traces Egyptian civilization from prehistory to the present; it is also home to the royal mummies moved from the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square.
