Protective Goddess: Cow

National Museum of Egyptian Civilization

This figure of a cow comes from a display of protective goddesses. The cow was the sacred form of Hathor and of the celestial cow Mehet-Weret, mother goddesses who nourished the king and received the dead into the afterlife.

The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Fustat, Cairo, opened in 2021 and traces Egyptian civilization from prehistory to the present; it is also home to the royal mummies moved from the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square.
