Khonsu, the moon god whose name means "traveler", was the son of Amun and Mut and completed the divine triad of Thebes. He is usually shown as a young man wrapped like a mummy, wearing the sidelock of youth and the crescent and full moon on his head, and holding the crook, flail and scepters of kingship.
His temple in the southwest corner of Karnak was begun by Ramesses III and is one of the best-preserved temples of the New Kingdom.
The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Fustat, Cairo, opened in 2021 and traces Egyptian civilization from prehistory to the present; it is also home to the royal mummies moved from the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square.
