Photograph of a Van de Velde painting depicting yachts and a man'o war at the mouth of the Thames. Photographer name printed on lower margin; below is a manuscript inscription from the individual who gave this object to Clark. In the same hand is written an inscription on the verso describing the painting, which reads,
"From a picture in oil, in the collection of C. Newton-Robinson Esq, London.
Yachts and Man of War at the Mouth of the Thames
by W. van de Velde
The two yachts are probably those belonging to Charles II and the Duke of York, mentioned in Pepys' Diary.
The middle figure in the group of three seated on the quarter-deck of the nearest yacht, may be the King himself. He wears a hat, while the gentlemen on either side are uncovered.
The picture is about five times the size of the photograph [note: 4" by 5"], both in height and width."
