Hand-colored lithograph that commemorates the loss of several packet ships and an emigrant ship off Leasowe lighthouse near Liverpool during the Hurricane on January 7th and 8th 1839. Many ships were battered and wrecked at sea, as well as in coastal ports. A large wave crashes over the deck of the 'Pennsylvania' on the left as sailors climb the rigging. The British emigrant ship 'Lockwoods' is on the right being jostled by the wind and waves as a crowd gathers on deck. Both vessels fly their country flags upside down as a sign of distress. In the background are various named vessels weathering the storm and attempting to make rescue efforts.
