Ship portrait (side view) of a Venetian barge called the Bucentaure. The Bucentaure (also spelled Bucentaur) was the name given to the series of state barges belonging to the Doges of Venice, and used in the annual Ascension Day ceremony where the Doge symbolically wedded Venice to the sea. This ship is single masted, flying one flag, with no sails on the mast; double figureheads. Printed in the lower margin is the following text: "THE BUCENTAURE. Newton Sculpt."
According to a Clark note, this was the first ship called Bucentaure, built in A.D. 887.
