In the foreground are two rowboats full of men and a large seal, under attack. In the leftmost boat, a bearded man in a tall fur cap stands with hands outstretched. Near him, an ax has become embedded into the back of the seal, which is bleeding. In the boat to the right of the seal, a man raises an ax, four men row, and another man fires a long musket at the seal, which has taken hold of one of the oars with its mouth. The plate is labeled "Plaat 7." and "Blz. 50."
On the verso is printed a passage of text in Dutch describing the image.
