The SS 'Archimedes,' center right, leans on her port-broadside as a wave passes under her. Another unidentified steamer, bow forward, sails in the left background. The 'Archimedes' was most notable for being the world's first steamship to be driven by a screw propeller. She had considerable influence on ship development, encouraging the adoption of screw propulsion by the Royal Navy and inspiring Isambard Kingdom Brunel's SS 'Great Britain.'
