To the back left, is a "seventy-four," a type of two-decked sailing ship of the line which nominally carried 74 guns. To the right, a cutter and another larger and armed ship are in the background. The center 3rd rate is depicted with the most detail. As the ships are further behind the field of view, the outlines of the vessel get fainter and thinner. There are minimal depictions of the context or setting. Thin, simple lines make up the waves of the water. The types of ships are inscribed underneath the image.
