Yachts the property of Gentlemen belonging to the Yacht Clubs preparing to start off Greenwich College River
A colored lithograph of eight cutter-rigged yachts maneuvering off Greenwich Hospital on the River Thames. A paddle steamer is visible in the right background and two men in a wherry are in the right foreground. The sails largely obscure the almost axial view of the Hospital. Untrue to real life, the domes are represented as drums with conical roofs. Beginning around 1775, yacht clubs formed by respectable English gentlemen gained momentum to promote yachting and yacht racing on the River Thames.
