A black-and-white etching of three vessels. In the center the "seventy-four" is in stays. The ship's head is being brought up to the wind by turning its bow toward the breeze so that the direction from which the wind blows changes from one side to another and allows the vessel to maneuver towards its desired course. The text underneath the image indicates that the vessel on the left is a brig and the vessel on the right is a 2nd rate 84-gun vessel. There are minimal depictions of the context or setting. Thin, simple lines make up the waves of the water.
This print is illustration No. 2 from 'Six Engraved Outlines of Ships of War from a First-rate to a Cutter' (London: N. Pocock, 1815) by Nicholas Pocock.
