AF-WD-0381.T.jpg

Crudely hand-colored engraving by an anonymous artist depicting two ships in the Arctic sea, with an island and two bears in the right-hand foreground and more ships in the background. Icebergs in right-hand background. Many areas of ice have been miscolored brown; bears have been colored black, although they were likely intended to be polar bears. Many of the sails and signal flags have been colored a vivid magenta hue. Printed in lower margin, "Navigatio super Glaciem. La Navigation Sur la Glace" (Eng: Navigating on the Ice) and "C.c.4." Copy in reverse of a print by Georg Balthasar Probst made around 1730.
