A congregation of properly dressed men in top hats in the neoclassical courtyard of the old Liverpool Exchange Building in 1847. In the center is the Nelson Monument sculpted by Richard Westmacott before it was moved to the north of the Town Hall. The structure served as a center for mercantile exchange where businessmen could assemble and make transactions. In the book, Bygone Liverpool by Ramsay Muir and others, the illustration is supplemented with a key of the names of all the businessmen depicted.
