A chaotic scene of violence and destruction at the climax of the Dutch raid of the English river Medway to the main naval base at Chatham. A group of boats engage in man-to-man combat in the left foreground; wide-eyed men gasp for their last breath, slump over in death, and grip their weapons to take a swing, stab, and slice. In the midst of the physical altercations, Captain Jan van Brakel fires a pistol at a soldier in the British boat. Looming behind them is the captured English flagship the 'Royal Charles,' which the Dutch took as a trophy. In the background, the English fleet burns in a fire. The Dutch captured 13 ships in which all of them were burned except the 'Royal Charles.' In the right middleground, the two men standing in a rowboat wearing feathered hats and sashes are Cornelis de Witt, the commander of the Dutch fleet, and Michiel de Ruyter, an admiral. The attack was considered one of the greatest total losses in British naval and military history. This raid also exposed the vulnerability of the British coastline.
