In the 19th century, several fast-sailing packet ships were built expressly for regular trade between England and Madeira. These ships were commanded by experienced seamen and fitted with the best accommodations of comfort for passengers for the voyage that would take 8-12 days. The brig, 'Brilliant,' depicted in this print was one of the vessels made for the Southampton-Madeira route. Viewed from her port-broadside, she sails off a shore carrying a British ensign. Her main course is not fully unfurled and flaps in the wind. In graphite someone has written 11th August 1853 with an initial on the bottom right margin.
