A sloop passing Calshot Castle near Fawley, Hampshire. The device fort, Calshot Castle, was built by Henry VIII as a chain of defenses along the English south coast against the French and Spanish navies. Three sloops navigate close to the castle. This is Plate 18 of the 'Liber Nauticus, and Instructor in the Art of Marine Drawing' (London: Edward Orme, 1806) by Dominic Serres and his son John Thomas Serres. Both were painters to the King.
