This chart shows the tides flowing through the Straits of Gibaltar (between southern Spain and northern Africa). From John Seller's "The English Pilot" published in 1677; it was a famous, continuously updated collection of English seacharts publis hed in the late 17th and 18th centuries. Tide tables appear at top and bottom. The cartouche containing the title is decorated by a figure represented as Neptune. From 1677 onwards, Seller's partners Colston, Fisher, Atkinson and Thornton took over production.
