Stela Dedicated to Amenhotep I and Ahmose-Nefertari

Museo Egizio, Turin

King Amenhotep I and his mother, Queen Ahmose-Nefertari, were revered as the founders and divine protectors of the workmen's village at Deir el-Medina. On this brightly painted stela they are shown enthroned as gods, receiving worship and offerings from the stela's dedicant.

The cult of the deified king was one of the most important in the village: his statue was carried in procession and consulted as an oracle to settle disputes between the villagers.
