Amduat Papyrus of Shepeset-heryt

Museo Egizio, Turin

The Amduat, "That Which Is in the Underworld", describes the sun god's journey through the twelve hours of the night, battling the chaos serpent Apophis before being reborn at dawn. In the New Kingdom it was painted on the walls of royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings.

After the New Kingdom, abridged versions of the Amduat were copied onto papyri for priests, priestesses and other members of the Theban elite, like this example made for a woman named Shepeset-heryt, so that they too could share in the sun's regeneration.
