Commodus (r. 180-192 CE) was the son of Marcus Aurelius and the last emperor of the Antonine dynasty. Remembered for his extravagance and for fighting as a gladiator in the arena, he identified himself with Hercules and was assassinated in 192, bringing the era of the "five good emperors" to a violent end.
Portraits of the emperor were displayed in public buildings across the provinces, including at Ephesus.
The Ephesus Archaeological Museum in nearby Selçuk houses finds from the ancient city, including sculpture from its fountains, public buildings and the Terrace Houses of its wealthiest residents.
