The love story of Eros (Cupid) and Psyche, the mortal woman whose name means "soul", was told most fully by the Roman author Apuleius in the 2nd century CE. After many trials Psyche is made immortal and united with Eros, a tale that was also read as an allegory of the soul's journey.
Sculptures of the couple were popular decorations in Roman houses and gardens.
