Eros, the winged god of love, was a popular subject for small sculptures that decorated Roman houses, gardens and fountains. He was often shown as a playful child, riding animals, carrying torches or garlands, or asleep.
Many sculptures of this kind at Ephesus come from the Terrace Houses, the richly decorated homes of the city's elite on the slope above Curetes Street.
The Ephesus Archaeological Museum in nearby Selçuk houses finds from the ancient city, including sculpture from its fountains, public buildings and the Terrace Houses of its wealthiest residents.
