Reconstruction of the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus

Ephesus Archaeological Museum, Selçuk

This model reconstructs the Artemision, the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. The great Archaic temple, built around 550 BCE with the support of King Croesus of Lydia, was one of the largest Greek temples ever built, surrounded by a forest of more than a hundred Ionic columns.

It was burned in 356 BCE by a man named Herostratus seeking fame, and rebuilt on the same grand scale in the Hellenistic period. Today only a single re-erected column stands in the marshy site near Selçuk.
