Known as the "Great Artemis" or "Colossal Artemis", this statue shows the goddess of Ephesus wearing a tall crown shaped like a temple facade, with the rows of rounded forms on her chest and animal figures on her skirt that identify the Ephesian cult image. Like the smaller "Beautiful Artemis", it was found in the Prytaneion, the city hall, where the sacred fire of the city was kept.
The Ephesian goddess blended Greek Artemis with the Anatolian mother goddess tradition and is often associated with Cybele. Her temple, the Artemision, was one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world.
