Chest from the Tomb of Tutankhamun

Egyptian Museum in Cairo

This painted wooden chest with a vaulted lid comes from the tomb of Tutankhamun, discovered by Howard Carter in 1922. The tomb held dozens of chests and boxes filled with the king's clothing, jewelry, linen, sandals, games and other belongings for the afterlife.

Chests like this were often decorated over every surface with painted scenes and inscriptions, and the vaulted lid echoes the shape of an Egyptian shrine.
