Statuette of Jupiter

British Museum

Jupiter, the Roman equivalent of the Greek Zeus, was the king of the gods and the protector of the Roman state, worshiped on the Capitoline Hill in Rome as Jupiter Optimus Maximus, "best and greatest".

Small statuettes of Jupiter, usually shown as a bearded man holding a thunderbolt and scepter, were set up in household shrines (lararia) and sanctuaries throughout the empire, from Italy to Roman Britain.
