Mythological Papyrus of Mesha-redui-sekeb, Singer of Amun

Museo Egizio, Turin

This funerary papyrus belonged to a woman who served as a Singer of Amun, one of the many musicians attached to the temple of Amun at Thebes. So-called mythological papyri, which tell the story of the afterlife mostly through painted vignettes with only short captions, became popular among the Theban clergy and their families after the end of the New Kingdom.

Scenes on papyri of this kind typically show the deceased adoring gods, the judgment before Osiris, and episodes from the sun god's nightly journey through the underworld, which the owner hoped to join in order to be reborn each morning.
