Zhejiang University Museum of Art and Archaeology

Origin and Idea

The Art and Archaeology Museum of Zhejiang University was established by Zhejiang University and Professor Fang Wen, a famous Chinese art historian. The idea is that human beings create their civilization by means of behavior, language and art, and record their civilization by means of words and visual historical materials. Therefore, the cultivation of visual literacy should become the basic component of University education. Based on this idea, Zhejiang University decided to establish the Museum of Art History Teaching in 2009 and officially named it the Museum of Art and Archaeology of Zhejiang University.

The Art and Archaeology Museum of Zhejiang University (hereinafter referred to as "our Museum") is not an art gallery or cultural relics exhibition hall in the ordinary sense; it is the intersection of words and vision, the intersection of different disciplines, and the intersection of human experience. Here, teachers and students of Zhejiang University, scholars outside school, artists and the public will exchange, discuss and share each other's ideas; promote the exchange and integration of disciplines; stimulate creativity and critical thinking through the interpretation of works of art; and reflect on the new direction of civilization development while keeping in mind the tradition of human civilization.

Mission

Our primary mission is to support and enhance the teaching and research of Zhejiang University. Through the collection, teaching, research and exhibition of original works of art, and through cooperation with teachers and students of different disciplines of Zhejiang University, we are committed to improving the aesthetic literacy, visual ability and critical thinking of teachers and students of Zhejiang University.

The museum is a precious cultural resource in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China and the world. Its collection, exhibition and education projects are shared with the public; through the development of specific projects, the public is encouraged to participate in its activity; through exhibitions, seminars and academic publishing, its resources are shared with the local, Chinese and world public, contributing to the establishment mission of Zhejiang University to "enhance knowledge and promote knowledge".

The library's duty is to serve the teaching of Zhejiang University. Therefore, the collection of representative samples of human beings'different civilizations and different times' art is the first priority, and the only criterion is not the artistic quality of the works.
