Qaitbay Citadel, Alexandria
The Qaitbay Citadel in Alexandria, Egypt, is a historic fortress located on the eastern point of the Pharos Island, where one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Lighthouse of Alexandria, once stood. Constructed in 1477 AD by Sultan Al-Ashraf Sayf al-Din Qaitbay, the citadel was built as a defensive fortress to protect the city from the threat of Ottoman invasion. Over the centuries, it has served various roles, including a military garrison, a royal residence, and, in more recent times, a maritime museum.
