Lithograph of a naval engagement during the Three Days' Battle, which took place between February 28 and March 2, 1653, in the First Anglo-Dutch War (1652-1654). The Dutch fleet under Maartan Tromp encountered the English fleet under Robert Blake while escorting a returning merchant fleet home safely. Many Dutch warships were lost while the British suffered few losses. A large part of the Dutch merchant fleet, by contrast, arrived safely in the home ports. The ships of both fleets are mixed in a calm sea. A British ship at right. In the foreground, a British sloop. Plate 18 of P.J. Schotel, 'Heldendaden der Nederlanders ter zee' (Amsterdam: Frans Buffa en Zonen, 1850-1855).
