THE PROVINCE / ULSTER / DESCRIBED.
Folio map of the northernmost province in Ireland hand colored in outline from Book 4 of 'Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain' by John Speed. The map is backed by paper, which obscures the English text of chapter 5, pages 145 and 146 on the verso. The text gave an account of the most notable events and principal features of the county. Book 4 dealt with Ireland and contained a general map and four maps of the four provinces (Leinster, Munster, Connaught, and Ulster). The map includes County Louth and an inset of "Enis Kelling (Enniskillen) Fort." Speed's map of Ireland was considered a great improvement on Mercator.
Inscription: "Performed by John Speede and are to be solde by John Sudbury and George Humble in Popeshead alley at London. Cum Privilegio. An. 1610."
