Page 555 from the book "De Roma Sotterranea" ("On Subterranean Rome"), by Antoine Bosio. With an engraving depicting a decorative panel with a motif of intersecting circles; within some of the intersections are depictions of Biblical scenes and figures. These have been labeled with Roman numerals to correspond to passages in the Italian text printed above and below, describing the figure. III features Jonah being flung from a ship into the open mouth of a creature with a draconic head and a sea serpent's tail; IIII (corresponding with IV in the captions) features the same creature spitting Jonah onto a cliff; V features Jonah under a trellis covered with gourd-vines. The relevant section of caption reads, in translation:
"III. Jonah cast into the sea to be devoured by the Whale.
IV. Jonah vomited onto land by the Whale.
V. Jonah under the pergola in the shade of the Gourds." These lines have been pointed out with pencilled-in arrows on the left margin.
Watermark in paper; rectangular with what may be an animal motif. Brown streak across lower half of paper; does not appear to be ink.
