A black and white albumen print of port-side view of the side-wheel steamship 'Suwo Nada.' The ship was originally built to service the China trade, but she spent the first months of her career running routes between New York, New Orleans, and Havana as Confederate commerce raiders made the China trade too dangerous. In January 1865, she was hired as a vessel for troop transport for the Union Army. When she was released from service in April, she set out for China commanded by Arthur Hamilton Clark.
