Monochrome image depicting Poseidon, holding his trident and a crown, down on one knee before Aphrodite, who sits on a throne surrounded by retainers. She rests her foot upon a dolphin or whale and is clad in sumptous drapery. A flag, bearing among other emblems an anchor, flies behind her, and in the sky there is a bright light with a triangle with an eye inside it, sending down a ray of light. Artist attibutions and date are given in very small print at the base of the engraving.
Although the ink has been somewhat worn away, Kirkall's remarkable command of light and shadow in engravings is demonstrated here: note the foreground and background in shadow, and the carefully rendered gradation of tone within the drapery.
