Two separate parts: object and label. Depicts the Salem arriving in a port, possibly in Genoa due to the unique lighthouse and fortress complex on land in the distance. Several small boats follow behind the "Cleopatra's Barge." This object is a black-and-white, photo-processed reproduction of a painting or print.
The "Cleopatra's Barge" was built by Retire Becket for Capt. George Crowninshield of Salem. No expense was spared in her decoration and construction. Crowninshield made a trip to the the Mediterranean from Salem in 1816, stopping by Fayal, Madeira, Barcelona, Tangiers, Gibralta, Malaga, Marseilles, Toulon, Geona, Leghorn and the Island of Ella and arrived at Salem October 3, 1817. When Crowninshield died, the vessel was dismantled and sold. Later, she was taken to the Hawaiian islands and became the private yacht of King Kamehameha II.
